World Earth Day at Lahore Zoo

LWMC celebrated World Earth Day in collaboration with Lahore Zoo. A range of activities including tree plantation, holding of awareness walk, symbolic waste picking and a drawing competition with year’s theme of World Earth Day “Green Cities” were conducted. Awareness walk was held in the Zoo and students from University of Central Punjab, KIPS School System and of local schools also took part zeal and zest. Campaign participants briefed the visitors about the importance of World Earth Day and distributed leaflets.

World Environment Day

LWMC in collaboration with Parks & Horticulture Authority (PHA) marked World Environment Day at Shaukat Khanum Hospital Chowk Johar Town and Jallo Park to highlight the significance of necessary measures to be taken to save environment from the menace of global warming. WED celebrations included holding of awareness walk, tree plantation, camp installation, deployment of Litter Wardens on traffic signals, leafleting, public briefing and resolution signing. DG PHA Shakeel Ahmad led the campaign along with LWMC officials. Officials of PHA, Albayrak, Ozpak, civil society members and students of UCP, KIPS and LCWU also joined the campaign with an aim to contribute their part in this regard.

Facilitating Christians workers on Easter

LWMC ensured special cleanliness arrangements in Christian colonies and churches on the occasion of Easter in order to express joy and solidarity with them. LWMC is at the forefront of efficient cleaning in Lahore and more than six thousand Christian Employees work for it. Their contribution for the success of LWMC & cleaning Lahore can never be under-estimated. A team of senior officials from LWMC visited various Churches of Lahore and presented bouquets and sweets to senior Christian Clergymen such as Bishop Emeritus Alexander John Malik, Bishop of Lahore Irfan Jameel, Bishop Sebastian, Reverend Shahid Mairaj, Reverend Emmanuel, Reverend Majeed Abel, Father Joseph Shehzad and others.

LWMC also facilitated their Christian workers and made arrangements for their families by providing free entry & entertainment in Lahore Zoo, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park and Jillani Park (Race Course Park). Reverend Shahid Mairaj on behalf of Christian community appreciated role of LWMC for making special cleanliness arrangements in churches and Christian Colonies of Lahore.

Moharam-ul-Haram

LWMC made special arrangements for cleanliness during the month of Muharam ul Haram with focus to sessions of mourning’s and procession routes and for mechanical sweeping and washing of Imam Bargahs, procession routes and surrounding areas of mourning sessions. Model camps were set up to sensitize the citizens.

Clean Lahore Stars Of the Year Awards

To acknowledge and appreciate the services and role of sanitary workers, officials, community and various stakeholders for contributing towards the efforts of materializing the dream of clean Lahore into a reality, very first time, LWMC introduced ‘Clean Lahore Stars of the Year Awards’. 800 sanitary workers, 150 supervisory staff were awarded with cash Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 respectively whereas senior officials, civil society representatives such as students, media personnel and officials of District Departments were also given appreciation shields and certificates for their contribution.

Suhail Chaudhary, Director General Parks & Horticulture Authority Mian Shakeel Ahmad, Managing Director Punjab Education Foundation Dr. Anila Salman, Chief Public Relations Officer City District Government Dr. Nadeem-ul-Hassan Gillani, Father from Cathedral Church Lahore Rev. Shahid Miraj, Corporate Relations Officer World Wildlife Fund Ms. Sania Khan and Brand Manager Lifebuoy Pakistan Mr. Ammar Mohsin.

“Clean is Green Campaign” at Murree

As per Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif’s Murree Development Plan, LWMC lent supportive hand to Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) to improve state of cleanliness in the hilly landscape of Murree. LWMC launched a massive cleanup and awareness campaign which lasted for more than three months to make the resort waste free.

Murree campaign was carried out in three phases i.e. short term, medium term and long term. A total workforce of 300 workers, supervisory staff along with heavy machinery mechanical sweepers, washers, mini dumpers, loaders etc took part in the day night operations. Operation was mainly comprised of De-silting of drains, zero waste activity in the nook & corner, mechanize sweeping & washing of roads etc. Heaps accumulated since many years on the hills and in the depths were removed using different techniques.

Second Term Plan included a massive public awareness campaign by setting up camps and holding walks at major resorts including Pindi Point, GPO Chowk Mall Road, Kashmir Point and Jhika Gali engaging local community, students and tourists. As per Long Term Plan, a detailed waste characterization study was done to help RWMC decide method or technology such as composting, biogas or incineration for the management of waste in future.

Plantation for Sanitation Campaign’ at Waste Disposal Site

LWMC started ‘Plantation for Sanitation campaign’ with an objective to plant some 7000 trees at it’s under construction waste disposal site, Lakhodair. More than 1500 students from city’s leading educational institutions took part in the campaign. Chairman LWMC Kahwaja Ahmad Hassan along with several MNAs and MPAs inaugurated the campaign by planting a tree and while addressing the ceremony he said that provision of cleaner and healthier environment to the citizen’s is the one of the top priorities of government. Students of leading educational institutions also took part in sapling campaign expressing their deep association with LWMC’s efforts to transform their beloved city into world’s one of the cleanest city on the world map.

Independence Day Celebrations

Year 2014 Independence Day was commemorated in a unique way. It was observed as Independence Month by the whole nation to express solidarity with martyrs of Zarb-e-Azb Military Operation that was being conducted at that time to liberate beloved homeland from menace of terrorism.

LWMC held several ceremonies to mark Independence Celebrations in which a large number of Christian workers participated to express solidarity on this auspicious occasion. Ceremonies included Waving of National Flags on its 35 offices, installation of stalls on city’s major visiting places and making of human flag by company’s Christian workers. National Flags were waved on all LWMC offices. LWMC embellished its head office situated at Shaheen Complex with 60 feet long national flag.

In connection with Maah-e-Azadi celebrations, LWMC organized a grand flag march at Wahga Boarder. Objective of the March was to express solidarity with the nation and observe the golden moments of great Maah-e-Azadi with enthusiasm. LWMC and Albayrak also set up stalls decorated and branded with national flags, balloons and stickers. Giveaways like national flags, stickers, badges, headbands and wrist bands carrying messages of cleanliness were distributed among citizens.

Cleanliness Weeks Campaign

A special campaign comprising of weeklong cleanliness & awareness activities was carried out in all the constituencies of the city with an aim to firstly, improve sanitation situation in the respective constituencies and secondly, to sensitize residents to play their active role in the maintenance of the neat environment.

Political leadership i.e. MNAs, MPAs, Coordinators, representatives of trade unions, civil society bodies were involved to carry our message to every citizen. Members National Assemblies Pervaiz Malik, Shaista Pervaiz, Mehar Ishtiaq and Members Provincial Assemblies Majid Zahoor, Khawaja Imran Nazeer, Ghazali Saleem Butt, Afzal Khokhar, Saif-ul-Malook Khokhar, Bao Akhtar, Kiran Daar, Mian Marghoob Ahmad and Chaudhary Shahbaz have persistently joined our extensive campaigns to bring positive change in the public behavior.

Cleanliness Week Campaign proved to be a highly successful as it helped LWMC rectify many of its issues like complaints about ghost workers, assurance of field staff attendance etc.

Children Literature Festival 2014

A grand Literature Festival is held every year at Children Library Complex Lahore with an aim to promote the books reading culture among school going children. Publishers from all over the Pakistan establish book stalls in the festival which attract hundreds of students and their parents to have both fun and opportunity to learn.

LWMC took benefit of using this platform for dissemination of message of clean environment among a large number of school going children at the same time. Hundreds of students, teachers and parents were briefed on the proper disposal of waste especially use of waste bins in everyday life. Campaign included setting up of stall, lecture sessions, screening of cartoon animations & documentaries, display & distribution of awareness material.

Anti Dengue Campaign

Measures to control, combat and eradicate epidemic Dengue have been the essential components of LWMC’s all campaigns. Individual as well as collaborative efforts were done in this regard through operational measures and extensive awareness campaigns as per community mobilization Program. LWMC took part in Anti Dengue Days celebrated by district government departments.

Company ensured cleanliness arrangements across the city, participation in major awareness walks, setting up of camps, briefing of masses and distribution of leaflets regarding precautionary steps to combat dengue. Dengue campaign is mainly marked with a massive cleanup operation for clearance of heaps from open plots. Some 1200 places have been identified which are used by citizens for disposal of waste where there machinery is deployed for removal of garbage. Anti Dengue efforts of LWMC were admired by Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif and senior officials of many other stakeholders.
